No one wants to hear that they have cancer.

It’s news that is never welcomed, never celebrated.

If you are faced with the disease, you hope to find a hospital that can offer the very best treatment and most compassionate care. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, I was extremely lucky to have become a patient at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH).

I can’t find adequate words to describe the wonderful attention I received while I was there. Every single person I came in contact with—from staff, to nurses, to physicians— was incredibly kind and caring. I knew right away that they were going to do everything they could to help me get better.

Thanks to the advanced care I received at MGH, I did beat breast cancer. Unfortunately, I was later diagnosed with a melanoma as well. When I was once again sent to Michael Garron Hospital for treatment, I was grateful and relieved. I felt like I was coming home.

When I returned to MGH to treat my melanoma, I was thrilled to find that many of the staff remembered me and greeted me by name. That is something you cannot put a price on. Once you are in the loop, you are never dropped from their radar. You become part of their family . . .

When it was time for my second round of cancer treatment, I felt confident that MGH would be able to provide the services, equipment and testing I needed to face this disease. My doctors were very forthcoming and honest with me about the care I was about to receive.

“We are going to do this together,” they told me.

My surgeon made sure I didn’t need any skin grafts after having the melanoma removed. When the biopsy was sent away, staff worked hard to get the results back to me as quickly as possible. I always felt like everyone really cared about me and always had my best interests and comfort at heart.  It is this sort of positive environment that gives patients the optimal chance to heal.

Even my chemotherapy was more manageable because of the people at this Hospital. I was met with a big hug at the start of every treatment.

It was this compassion, combined with cutting-edge technology that helped me to beat cancer twice. MGH was the place that made all the difference in my fight, and for that I will always be grateful.

It’s hard for me to put into words how strongly I feel about MGH. The staff still follow up with me today, and I know that they will always be concerned about my well-being. There is no doubt about it, I am alive and well today because of the care I received at MGH.

It is comforting to know that if I find myself facing another medical challenge, I can go home to MGH. No matter where I live, I plan to continue coming to this Hospital. The caring in this building is absolutely palpable. That is not something you can forget.
